A combination of nolvadex and tamoxifen (brand names: Nolvadex, Tamoxifen, Alesyl and Nolvadex) is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) and is a common method of post-cycle therapy (PCT) for post-menopausal women. Tamoxifen is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), and Nolvadex is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). A study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSC) found that menopausal women who took tamoxifen or Nolvadex for five years experienced significantly better PCT compared with tamoxifen users. This study, which is published in the journalPost-Aesthetic Care, was the first study to assess the efficacy of Nolvadex and Tamoxifen in post-menopausal women who had undergone PCT.
The study involved 16 post-menopausal women with a median age of 52 years. Each woman received a total of four PCT cycles per year, with each cycle lasting up to five years. The researchers measured the effectiveness of Nolvadex and Tamoxifen in terms of PCT, overall adverse event (AEs), and the incidence of post-cycle treatment in post-menopausal women who were treated with Nolvadex and Tamoxifen. The study also compared the effectiveness of Nolvadex and Tamoxifen in pre-cycle PCT.
The researchers found that Nolvadex and Tamoxifen in pre-cycle PCT were significantly more effective than Nolvadex and Tamoxifen in post-cycle PCT.
The researchers noted that post-cycle therapy was more likely to have adverse events, so Nolvadex and Tamoxifen was a better choice. The most common adverse events were hot flashes and vaginal discharge, with the most common AEs were night sweats, vaginal dryness, and mood changes.
“This study shows that the combination of Nolvadex and Tamoxifen is a safe and effective post-menopausal alternative to traditional tamoxifen therapy in post-cycle therapy,” said co-senior author Dr. Michael B. Wolfe, UCSC’s chief of research and data management.
“In the absence of a strong clinical trial that compares Nolvadex and tamoxifen against a variety of alternative treatments, this study’s findings will serve as a valuable benchmark for other post-menopausal therapies,” Wolfe added.
“Nolvadex and Tamoxifen are currently the best-selling post-menopausal treatment options,” Wolfe added.
